petrol prices- gggrrr
Sorry I need a rant
Went past the local gargage today and it it £1.14.9 for unleaded, good job I dont have a diesel car £1.30.9 😲 I was complaining in the staffroom and apparently this garagae is not the most expensive local petrol station.
I wish I could use public transport more (and I would to boycot petrol stations) but the service up here is sooo terrible, there not even 1 bus an hour going anywhere 😠
I cant believe we pay so much for pertrol and diesel when we are an oil producing country (the North sea is on my door step- maybe I will go dig for oil myself!! lol)
The prices at the moment are DISGUSTING! getting to the point where I dread using the car ( maybe thats what they are trying to get us to do ).....but still.... 😛
I hear ya hun, it cost us 65 quid to fill our tank in our car for holiday, we still have half left but it won't last long now. its the first time in ages that the tank has been full, we used to be able to put £20 in it and it would be over half full, now it will just get us a 1/4 now. Scandalous.
It's going for about $3.75 (US dollars) here right now 😛
And it's such a shame because there are other natural resources we could be using to fuel our cars but the government keeps knocking down programs that could be put in place to utilize the resources.... GRRRRRR IS RIGHT!!
Do you pay for a gallon hun still?
Ours is priced by the litre!
candgsmum said:Yep, by the gallon here! It's so ridiculous... it takes 50-60 bucks now to fill up a tank that might have cost 15 bucks 5 years ago 🙁 I think it's only gonna get worse 😲

Don't get me started on this. Well I use a diesel for work and 20-25,000 miles per year. £1.27 per litre to you Americans thats about $3.50 per litre.
An imperial gallon is 4.5 litres although an American gallon is only 3.7 litres. So based on the American gallon we are paying $12.95 per gallon. And the Americans think they've got it hard.
Apologies to any Americans on here but I work with a lot of them and they are always moaning about the price of "gas". Its not gas its petrol, gas is a vapour not a liquid (unless its compressed to LPG).
Roll on the hydrogen fuel cell. At the end of the day I saw somebody building a tomato firing cannon running off a hydrogen power unit that they built from parts they found on the Scrapheap. Yes, I was watching Scrapheap challenge. Great show.
Our petrol has just gone up to $160.99 and everyone is going mad about it.I just put it in and dont say boo because i need to get around 🤔 also i think Australia is the 4th country with cheapest petrol prices??
After travelling through Europe two years ago and seeing their petrol prices my dh and i dont mind what we are paying as it was so much higher over there i think it was nearly $6.00 (Australian). 😲
Prices are crazy in the UK right now.
I run my Land Rover on 25% vegetable oil which I can pick up from supermarkets for 75p a litre - that helps a bit!
25% vegetable oil, 75% diesel. Gotta love those burn-anything diesel engines!

I'm sorry 😊 We've just always called it gas over here or gasoline... I've never known that the gas part was just vapors, so thanks for educating the American on that one 😉 😀

Vegetable oil is surprisingly very similar to diesel chemically - the main difference is that vegetable oil is thicker, and is slightly better at 'cleaning' and lubricating.
The problem with some modern cars is that the fuel injector is quite delicate and can get corroded by vegetable oil, so it's important to research whether it's safe to run vegetable oil as a fuel in your particular diesel car. I've had no problems with my 1992 Land Rover!
Basically - if your injector and engine can deal with vegetable oil (handy database here), you have two options.
A. Add a percentage of vegetable oil to your regular diesel - to dilute the thicker oil so you don't need to modify the car at all. In winter (when the cold makes oil thicker) I run 10-15% vegetable oil, and in the summer I plan to increase this to 30-40% when it's warmer. (Some run 50%+)
B. You can have a modification kit fitted which pre-heats the vegetable oil before it gets to your engine - this can cost £400-500 but will allow you to run 100% vegetable oil!
At the moment, you can find vegetable oil at the supermarket for 75-80p a litre - more expensive than 6 months ago (65p), but I suspect the price is increasing because more people are doing this. I noticed that last year, all the supermarkets stopped selling 'smart price' or 'value' vegetable oil 🤔
Even better - find a chip shop or restaurant and offer to take away their waste vegetable oil for free! You can then filter this with a fine cloth or other fine filtering material to get the food bits out and put it in your car the same as new veg oil - this won't cost you anything! Some people fill water butts with waste oil for this purpose.
The UK government used to tax any alternative fuels, which made it not much cheaper than diesel - but they now allow a personal allowance of 2500 litres a year before you have to declare it at all and pay tax.
If you own a diesel, do a lot of miles and are not too precious about your car (there's no evidence that running vegetable oil harms your engine, but to be honest there's not been huge amounts of research done), then I'd recommend looking into this option! 🙂
My car runs slightly quieter with vegetable oil, and it also cleans out the engine better than diesel to maintain performance. It's essentially 'carbon neutral' (The vegetable oil producing crop absorbs the same amount of CO2 that burning in my engine releases), and I have the added advantage of my exhaust fumes smelling a little bit like a chip shop! 😉
i love the vegetable oil idea but our car is a brand new mondeo and a company car so probably not worth the risk lol
the prices are ludicrous. james is always moaning about it
Our car is poorly at the moment, and to be honest we are trying not to use it too much now. We both can easily walk to work as we are lucky enough to live practically on the doorsteps of our work.
It's a petrol engine so I don't think veg oil would do much good in it lol.
My dad is thinking on converting his Land Rover to LPG, but he's been on about it for ages but I think he doesn't want to really fork out for the conversion kit. Saying that though, it's a V8 so maybe now he will lol, with how much it must be costing him to fill it up.
omg!!! james filled the car last night and it cost....
£75!!!!!!!!!! 😲 😲 😲
OUCH that must have hurt!! 😲
We were up oin our big town today and their petrol prices varied- Shell £1.17.9, esso £1.11.9 tescos and asda £1.13.9! I didnt look at the desiel price.
I have to agree with you all! It's one of our biggest gripes at the moment! Especially when the Oil companies are boasting about their record profits!!
We are diesel although around here it's around the 120/123 marker! Not seen too many places in this area reaching 130 yet - but i am sure it will in the next few weeks! 😠
Wolfblass said:by the time you get to 130 we will be up to nearly 140!!! the joys of living in Scotland- we seem to pay higher rates than the rest of the UK

I never used to watch the petrol prices much but at the moment I have an obbsession with it
