Where do the socks go?
Okay, so I am a mother of three children ages 10, 8, and 2. I am constantly doing laundry because there are 5 of us in the household. However, in my constant confusion, I find myself at Walmart or Target at least once or twice a month buying socks. We go home, my kids wear the new socks to school, for a whole week.. no problems, and I wash them on the weekend. That second week, again everything is fine..... we have pairs...but oh gosh when it comes to that next weekend wash day (this is when I wash all undergarments and such)...no pairs. Has anyone ever experienced this? It's like they walk away never to be seen again.
I have this problem as well. My kids are 6 and 13. What I find works is I taught my kid show to take their two socks after they have worn them and turn the top down so they are now a connected pair. Then they put them in the laundry basket to be washed. I wash them this way too. Sometimes they will separate in the wash but I always end up finding the mate in the load. I don't have to run out and buy socks anymore until they outgrow them or put holes in them.
My socks are alwas getting lost in the wash. LO's are so small that I probably lose half of hers. My solution was to buy a mesh bag, put all the socks in it and zip it closed. Then put the whole thing in thew washer/dryer. They get clean but stay together.
I'm convinced that I have the Bermuda Triangle somewhere within my washing machine or dryer...inevitably each washing load, one sock in a pair will go missing. The mystery is, why do they never go missing together?! I always have one left...and one magically is never to be seen again. One of life's oddities, that's for sure!
Oh my gosh! I have this problem all the time, and not just with my LO's socks, but all of ours. We are just a family of 3 but I find myself doing laundry constantly, and it always seems that when I get down to the bottom of the basket, there are always leftover socks! It literally drives me NUTS!
I even have a separate little clothes basket for all the lonely mismatch socks. Sometimes the mate ends up turning up in the basket, but sometimes not. I think that somehow the washer, or dryer, but my money is on the washer, eats them somehow, especially my daughter's tiny little socks.
If you ever find the mother-load of missing socks somewhere crazy in the washer or dryer, please let me know!
Disappearing socks is very common especially when done with a large number of clothing. My advice, which I do most times is to wash these socks separately and store them separately. It can be very annoying when you want to dress a child up with matching socks and you can only find one piece, you begin to wonder where the other strolled off to.
A simple strategy for storage is to fold one piece into the other to form a ball; this way, they both stay together and cannot walk away, except they bounce away... 😉
Ah, the age-old question! At one point I heard that they get caught between the agitator and... well, whatever else is in there. 😀 But I've seen those pulled off, and no, there aren't dozens of socks in there! Sock heaven maybe?! Hmm... no idea!
But to keep this on a serious note, someone mentioned a mesh bag and I don't know why I haven't thought of that before! Or why a major manufacturer hasn't picked up on it and started making cutesy designer mesh sock bags or something... or maybe they have and I've been living in a bubble not having heard of it?
In any case, I usually have quite a pile of unmatched socks that never do find their match... if it actually happens that the match comes along, it's rare.
I have this with the baby socks...I have a 2 year old and a 3 month old. So the weirdest thing is that baby stays home with me, so there is no way the socks can get lost at a school or anything like that...it's just like they up and leave. For no reason other than to annoy me. I think I have like 8 socks in her drawer that is still waiting for that special someone to come back....
Lol! I have this same problem! I don'r understand it! A couple of weeks ago I bought socks for my two year old, and today I could not find matches to any of them! Sometimes I think they are being eaten by the washing machine! Lol! There has to be a way to keep up with them so that I don't have to constantly buy more socks. I think I may try the idea of putting all of her socks in a mesh bag to wash them. That way all of her socks will remain together.
