HELP!!!! Difference between preschool and nursery?

🤔 Can someone please help me. I need to try and understand what the difference between preschool and nursery is?

I thought that preschool was just like a creche but today I was told that it wasn't. I have book my son into the nursery through the school, but should he be in preschool first?

Please help!!!!!!

I always thought pre-school and nursery were the same thing hun - they are both what would be attended b4 school!

I'm glad I'm not the only one. The other Mums at a play-date told me that I should have had my son in a pre-school now. I couldn't understand it, not originally from the UK I thought I was giving my son at a disadvantage. He is enrolled in the nursery linked to the primary school and he start in September.

Thanks Sugar

yeah hunny im sure pre school is nursey 🙂

think the only difference may be that a pre-school may teach simple lessons - i.e counting etc - whereas a nursery concentrates on learning through play if u see what i mean? i work in a day nursery and we arent Allowed to "TEACH" anything we are there to care for and promote learning through play!

Hi, there isnt really a difference between a day nursery and a pre school nursery the obvious difference is that a day nursery takes from birth-5 normally 7-6 and all year round whereas a pre school only takes children from 3yrs and is runs the same hrs and has the same holidays as school.
I worked in a day nursery for 6 yrs and now work in a pre school and have done for the last year and there is no difference from children 3+ in a day nursery or pre school, although the nursery i work in is attached to the school and we work with the reception teachers and they have visits to the school which i think makes starting school aneasier transition progress.
that was my first post ever 😀

HI there
There isn't hardly any difference at all.

My little boy goes to our local nursery which has general sessions for children from 2 years 6 months and then when they are in the year before they start reception they go to the classes called pre-school.

How old is your little one?? There is absolutely no need for your child to start any form of education until the year of their 5th birthday when legally they have to go to school.

Going to pre-school/nursery is an added bonus as it can help with early part of education such as number/letter recognition, social skills etc. Its nice to have a head start but not essential if you want to keep your little one at home for as long as possible (as a lot of mums do) 😀

😀 Thanks everyone for your responses.

My son is going 3 next weekend and he starts at the nursery up at the local school in September unifornma nd everything.

I'm very glad to know that He is not meant to go to up here a pre-school first.

We do a lot of work on letters, numbers and mazes etc as he enjoys them. He can also write his own name in capital letters.

It nice to have someone to talk to who will give me a straight answer not just telling me off. 😀

Thanks Again

Sweet, never let anyone make you feel you are wrong, you are the best thing for our son,My son has been in nursery from the age of 3 months as I had to work and he has been in reception class for the last year, I really wish I could of been at home with him but needs must and all that, and plus leagally in this country you dont have to send them to school untill they are five, they just like you to put them through the reception years which I do feel is beneficial to them. My only problem was that because Josh was in a private day nursery and not linked to the school he found it hard to move and settle as he new knowone and the other kids had gone through the school pre-school together.Dont you worry, I am sure your son has learnt loads while being home with mummy and now just sit back and be amazed as his mind grows through the school system.xxx Kel
