How much do you pay for you gas and electric???

I just wondered how much everyone paid per month?? We've got a 3 bed end town house and a pretty ancient central heating/hot water system but other wise we are very concious of our energy usage, we've got energy saving bulbs and switch everything off when not being used.

Our electric is an astonishing £71 per month and gas £91 and it's crippling us. We are looking into switching suppliers but I'm on a fixed price at the moment so we are weighing up whether or not to pay the penalties for breaking the fixed price.

I just wondered if I was actually paying anything out of the ordinary?

We have a real fires in the living room, dining room and our bedroom, so we don't have to pay out gas on that, I'll check our bills. Right last month gas was £56, electric £63.42. We have central heating but we don't have any double glazing.

We pay our electric pay as you go; but it works out to be about £10-£12 a week through the winter then a little less in summer when we're not using the tumble dryer. So about £45/£50 per month.

We do our gas quarterly and our most recent bill was £103, so about £35 per month.

I'm really good at going round turning things off, but Steve is a night mare for leaving things on so I nag him!

we normally use between 10-15 a week on each, both with british gas. But for some unknown reason this week we still had £12 on the gas and 7 electric before i went to top up today, so thats not much baring in mind we didnt have much odds left last week. I'm not complaining though 😀

Your electric does not sound massively wrong, but will depend on what you're using. Mine is around £55 a month for only me in a 3 bed house, but then I have two computers running 24/7 most of the year and plenty of other gadgets here and there.
Your gas sounds very high, and I would suggest that the house can't be that well insulated if you are using that much, either that or you have the heating on 24/7. Mine is usually on for around 6 hours a day over the winter, and only to dry clothes in the summer.

I have a 2 bedroomed (BIG rooms/high ceilings) 1940 stone build house right in the sea and with Scottish Hydro electric I pay £29 electric a month and £42 gas( I was also in credit with £50+ on both when I got my ladt bill) So to me both your bills sound really high but I am also aware there is just me and Joseph and we are out all day.

Well we pay £65 for the electric bill a month and £45 for the Gas. I actually thought this was quite high but listening to the rest of you it seems pretty average. Mind you we only have a 2 bedroom bungalow. Or 3 now with the extension but i havent had a knew bill since then so i don't know if it will have affected the price a lot? Your Gas does sound like a very large bill a month to me? I would definitely look into why you are paying so much! 😘 Xx

real fires are expensive. I used to have one (that worked the central heating) but 2 years ago the council took it out and put in gas. I was paying £40 a fortnight for 5 bags of coal, and extra for kindlers, peat and wood. Although I miss my fire, my gas is cheaper.

I appear to be quite lucky. I live in a flat and we only have electric. We have just had to increase our direct debit to £70 a month from £60. However it is worth nothing that had we stayed with EON, our original supplier, they wanted to increase the amount to £120 a month from £60 so we went to U Switch and moved to Scottish Power to get the £70 a month rate.
We are tight with our power though. We have night storgae heaters and even in the depths of winter we only switch on one in the living room and wear lots of jumpers and put blankets on the bed. Out hot water is only on for 3 hours a day and we unplug and switch just about everything off when not in use.

You really shouldn't burn peat, even treated peat release very dangerous gases, we burn dry wood which you are allowed to cut from the local forest, you could do in our old home as well, we've never paid for wood for our fire.

My electric does sound pretty normal then. My gas is so expensive because my boiler is old. We are king of guessing it's at least 15+ years old and it rattles and the pump is noisy. The water is warmed up and put into a storage tank and the water is warmed through that for the radiators. We have the water warmed up from about 6 until 9 for baths (although we do try to share the water where poss) and the washing up. Obviously when the temp in the tank drops it warms it all up again 😉 It then comes on about 5.30ish and goes off at 10ish. so that adds upto 8ish hrs, plus the boiler works harder for the central heating when it is on, but that is no higher than 21 degrees at the highest, we've turned off the heating now though. We were told that our boiler was inefficient but we can't afford a new one right now 🙁 I think we are with the most expensive supplier too (5 guesses which lovely company that is), I went on Uswitch and I could save upto £270 on gas and leccy a year so i think I'm going to swap as the penalty for breaking the fixed price works out at about £70, so I'm still saving!

we are spending £10 only.

Blimey! Got a new boiler and I'm only paying £60 now and I got my latest bill and I'm £160 infront! My electric has gone down to £30 but I need to up that about a fiver a month as we owe about £30, I got one of those electric thingies that measure your electric and shows you what you are using, it's quite good actually because you can tell what uses the most electric. It's a lot better than what I was paying before though!
