I'm sooo angry
My mum rang me this morning to tell me that my 87year old grandad got burgled last night. While he was home!
Apparently he woke at around 10pm last night to a man standing over his bed. He said, 'it is ok, we're police, their has been a burlary downstairs and we need you to get up' (he lives in warden controlled flats) he believed him and got up only to be marched into his living area where he pushed him in his chair and another bloke ransacked his room. Obviously grandad had realised they weren't police by then. When they went he phoned my mum and dad who then rushed straight over and phoned the police (who apparently were really good). They only took cash and most of his other belongings (like my late nans jewellery) are still there, thank god. Seems they only wanted cash. I am absolutely 😠 fuming, so mad to think people can do this. Why? Money for drugs i suspect!
Thank god they didn't hurt him though and although it is dispicable to pretend they were police i am kind of glad they did in a way as my grandad wasn't as scared when he first woke. Had they manhandled him from the start he could have had a heart attack or something! These people are some of the lowest of the low and i would love to get my hands on them!! Aaaaarrrgghhhh what is the world coming too?
omg hun. thats awful. yr poor grandad 🙁 im so pleased they didnt physically hurt him though. i hope hes ok.
people that hurt animals, children and the elderly imo are the scum of the earth. 😠 😠 😠
Oh no that is so terrible I can't imagine how upset and unsettled he was by this; and how did they get in if it's a warden controlled place? The tradesman door should only work in the morning surely and then they would need to be 'buzzed in' wouldn't they?
Whatever the reason that is so harsh and unforgivable for someone to do. Bless your poor grandad I hope he's ok.
Oh no how awful! Huge hugs for grandad! I bet he was soooo scared!
In warden controlled flats aswell, how on earth did they get in??
Hope he recovers okay! xx
Your family need to have serious words as to why people are able to gain entry into warden controlled flats, for burglars to get in and escape without being caught shows that jobs are not being done properly at all. Keep a good eye on him to make sure he copes okay in his flat.
Thanks for all the kind comments people. I have been getting updated by mum and apparently grandad is fine although a little confused.
In answer to your questions, we or the police don't know how they managed to gain entry to the flats although the warden isn't on duty 24hrs a day. At night when she isn't on duty they have a call center deal with problems. Grandad has an SOS pendant round his neck and a pull cord in his flat too. We think whoever did this knew the layout, knew there was no CCTV (they have cameras but all it does is beam the images of the front entrance to the residents tv's so they can see who is at the door. It isn't filmed.) knew thet the doors to the flats are only locked from the inside. If the resident hasn't locked it, it is just like opening a living room door (fire proof ofcourse) we also think they may have knowledge that the 2 other flats next to grandad on his floor were empty so there wasn't many people around that would be able to catch them. It is possible they may have had a key for the front security door too?
My mum has some small suspicion of a possible suspect too. A lad she knows (grew up where we did, behind the flats my grandad lives in and still lives there) is a known thief (although not burglary, that we know of) his gran lives in the same flats and on the same floor as my grandad, he may have had access to a key for the security door, would know the layout and the way it works there ie. no CCTV etc, he could even have buzzed his gran to let him in. None of the residents would have been suspect as obviously he would come and go there visiting his gran anyway. He also is a possible match to the description my grandad gave and takes drugs quite heavily. Mum didn't know whether to give the police his name as she had no evidence of his involvement. I told her to ring them anyway, she wasn't accusing him, just telling the police he may be worth looking at. So she rang them today. She says she feels really bad about it? I told her not to be silly, she wouldn't feel bad if it turns out to be him and if it isn't him there is nothhing for him to worry about anyway.
I am still sooo 😠 mad though!! Xx
Your mum has done the right thing. As an ex plod myself that info is very helpful. Thing is it might not have been him but he might have an idea who it is. So if he does not want the same thing happening to his Nan you might find he is helpful. Sounds like a highly possible suspect though.
Warden controlled flats are a nightmare when not manned 24 hours. It is as easy to get in to them as any other block of flats. I would be fuming too. 😠
Anyway, I hope your Grandad is feeling ok. Not sure if your area has something called a Bobby Van. We have in Bristol and we used to send the Bobby Van man round to anyone who had been burgled (especially elderly) and the man checks the premesis and fits (for free) some additional safety devices if neccesary and advises on improvements. It used to work really well in Bristol as it gives the victim a bit of confidence back, which really is very important in these cases.
I hope they catch the bugger who did this. If he has done it once he will do it again and you never know what the outcome might be.
Sending you hugs to try and calm you down. 😘 😘 😘
😘 Oh hun that is awful,i hope your grandad is ok.I think its best that your mum called the police all she did was give them a heads up on who has knowledge and access to the flats and as you said she isnt accusing him of doing it.
Makes me so blooming angry why cant people fund there own habbits or buy there own stuff (like get a job!!!) and leave innocent people alone 😛
I'm so sorry to read this. There really are some scumbags around aren't there 😠
You would think in warden controlled flats your grandad would be safe. It's a sad old world when we're not safe in our own beds now.
I hope the owners and warden will be doing something to sort this out pretty quickly! Surely they could pay a security guard at night?
So glad your grandad is ok though and not been hurt 😘
b*******! im sorry that your grandad got burgled what a bunch of t*** im right mad for him poor old chap!
omg!!Is he ok? I mean, he must be scared now!
Thanks guys. I'm still fuming now. Every time i think about iti get so mad! He is okay physically. He keeps phoning my mum (is dads dad but he works long hours so mum helps him out during the day) and asking what happened and saying i'm not safe anymore am i! It is soo hard. What do you say? Obviously mum has told im not to worry and he is safe, that security is being monitored closely at the moment. You never know though do you? I just pray they don't come back. I'm sure they won't but it does enter your head, especially as they saw what was in his bank account. He has a little bit of money from when he sold his house and bought the flat. Mum is ringing him every night to check he has locked his inner door now though just incase. I wish these people knew the havok they leave behind. It isn't just a case of taking the money, it can leave awful pshycological scars too!
Altho to gain entry to buildings there is a code that emergency services use so they dont need to buzz, if someone has got hold of this number they can use it to gain entry, my brother didnt have a key fob for his block when he first moved in so was given the code by his landlord to gain entry to his property.
Hope he is ok though
Aw hun I'm sorry to hear this 😘
There's some horrible people about and it annoys me that they have to take things that other have worked so hard for 🙁
It's a small comfort they didn't hurt him but, like you say it's still psychological hurt for him.
