Long distance?????

Do you think it can work?

A friend has just started a relationship with a guy who is moving in the next 2 weeks to start a new job, he will be about 400miles away. She has only been seeing him for about 4 weeks (he had his job interview the day after their first date) She really likes him and they both seem to be willing to gve it a go but some of her other friends think it will be a disaster.

I used to see a guy who stayed in Glasgow (nothing serious) while I was at Uni, he was 80miles away but it did work for us in the begining but he got promoted and was working as a head chef and did funny shifts and often had to work 7 days and I was at Uni and also working supposedly part time in a restuarant and we just never saw each other 🙁 So I think if they both try they will be fine (but they both have to try)

What do you guys think?

I think it can work if the long distance thing is not indefinate. It's a huge strain on a relationship (knowing from experience) when you aren't near each other, there has to be lots of trust and there has to be a definate time or commitment made by one or the other to make a move to be near each other again, eventually at least! That's just my opinion based on my own experience with a long distance relationship in my past.

yeah i agree with tammy. i lived 300miles away from james when we dated. only lasted 9months before i ended moving up here to be with him. i couldnt do it on a permanent basis

The guy has a great new job, something he has wanted to do for a while, my friend is a teacher and has a permanent contract (something that is hard to get in Scotland just now) but I think if it worked out she would move if she could get a job (even though she doesnt admit it just now- the girl is smitten)

We were away from each other when I went to university, Frank was quite prepared as his previous partner worked away and was home for one weekend a month for eight years, I however being 18 and obviously always right thought it would be easy as I'd be consentrating on having fun at uni most of the time. Wrong. I personally hated it, it made it really hard for me to cope with uni nevermind enjoy it, then after my first year I dropped out, obviously my parents weren't exactly impressed and I did nothing for a year, then I stayed at home and commuted to a local uni everyday.

I think going into the long distance thinking everything would carry on being fine made it a lot worse for me. If I had stayed at uni, Frank would have either had to move to be near me or I would of left him.

I am in the UK, Elin was in Sweden, and we made it work..so yes, it can work being apart, it's hard, but worth the rewards in the end.

And look at you two now Rich!! 😍

As the ladies said before If it's temporary it can work. 😉

Yep, i agree with everyone else. I think on a temporary basis it can deffinitely work. I lived in London when i started seeing mike (in Devon) i had a job with very long hours too and it was hard for us but we talked on the phone every night and i came down on the train as much as possible. However 6mths after we first started dating. I was struggling with it. It was decided i would either have to move or we would call it a day. Neither of us wanted to call it a day, so i gave up my job and house and moved to Devon not knowing anybody else locally. That was 7yr ago now and it was the best decision i ever made! 😍 Xx

Well i would not want it, but my brother and his wife met when he was in England and she lived in Sweden when they were teenagers. They are now 36 and very happily married with two kids.

Funnily enough they moved to Guernsey for years as my brother has a good job out there, but now they have just bought a house in Sweden and Jessica and kids are living there while my brother is still in Guernsey untill he finds another good job in Sweden.

Since the move they have seen each other lots on weekends and school holidays

So it can work i guess
