Slapped cheek??

Apart from really red cheeks what are the symptoms and have any of your kids had it? Summer has had bright cheeks all day and earlier said she felt sick, although seems ok again now, she is still red. I looked on the internet which said they are infectious before the symptoms come out so not much I can do now but they said it can be a risk in pregnancy. But then I don't even know if she has it 🤔

When Joseph had it he had a temp, felt sick and had cold like symptoms. The rash was really obvious - he did look like he had a hand print (palm on the cheek and finger like marks above his eye) It is contagious in pregnancy because it is from the same family as german measles. Contact your MW and tell them you supect GM has slapped cheek, they may want to do a blood test.

Personally i would get Summer checked out and diagnosed before you panic hun. Although i would mention it to MIdwife. She will prob want a diagnosis first. Alex is right they may want to do a blood test. A lot of women are already immune to slapped cheek anyway (most without even realising) so all may be fine whether she has it or not. Also, I suspected Jake may have had it a while back ( i was panicking a bot as we had been around a pregnant friend) but it turned out the cold he had caused a rash (this normally happens towards the end of the bug) it is the infection coming out apparently? It was nothing to worry about and wasn't contagious (well apart fromthe actual cold bet i suppose! 😉 ) Hope all is fine hun, just get checked Xx

I think I'll ring the surgery in the morning and say I think my daughter might have it and I'm pregnant and worried. Do they advise me to bring her in or should I just contact midwife about myself, then the balls in their court and they can advise. They say before 20 weeks is when there's more risk, which I am (14 weeks). Also it's about if you are immune or not, well without a blood test I don't know but I know I'm not immune to Rubella which is a similar illness so maybe best to get tested.

Joseph was diagnosed by the pharmacist because I went in and asked what the rash was.

Don't wait until tomorrow phone MW today and tell them you suspect she has slapped cheek, the sooner they know the sooner the can do somethng about it (if they do anything)

Slapped cheek disease is sometimes called fifth disease or erythema infectiosum. It is an infection caused by the parvovirus B19 virus. It most commonly occurs in children aged 4-12 years, but anyone can be affected. It is infectious (can be passed on). The infectious period is for 4-20 days before the rash appears. By the time the rash develops, it is usually no longer infectious. In some cases your child may get a feeling of nausea, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. It is at this stage that your child carries the virus and could infect other children - therefore you should keep your children away from others and from school because it could affect pregnant women. After 5 - 10 days the cheeks of the child will go red, like a rash. This is the obvious sign your child has the slapp cheek virus and your child can no longer pass the virus onto others. After 2 to 4 days the rash will disappear.Once you have had the disease you are immune for life.
