What would you do?
I have no idea what to do regarding this.
We moved into our current home just over 2 years ago -our house was a repossessed house that had been empty for more than 18 months as the previous family did a runner with huge mounting debts. So they haven't lived here for nearly 4 years, and we haven't once seen them
When we moved in we used to get lots of post addressed to them and we had to open it as the majority were debt collectors threatening to come to our door and take the money basically. Any statements etc or any post we could, we returned to sender to say they no longer lived here.
Well I just got a thick padded envelope addressed to previous owner. As per usual I opened it, but this time it's a birthday card with £10 in it. Problem I have is that I have no forwarding address for the previous tenants, and the person who sent the card hasn't put a return address either, or written their last name -so i can't trace by last name and town (from looking at stamp) If I return it to Royal Mail they will have no address to forward it to either, so it will just sit at their office.
What do I do? I am an honest person - but I see no solution to this tbh.
Thanks
Kerry
I'm not sure hun but I would be careful... I think in the states if you open mail addressed to someone else it's illegal, even if it's coming to your home. I would take it to the post office and say that you opened it not realizing it was not addressed to you.
yeah I know. We used to open the post as it was debt collectors and we wanted to ring them to say previous tenants never lived here. plus a year after we moved in we found previous ppl were still trying to get credit using this address.
I would send it back to royal mail and let them deal with it.
yeah I think I will - thanks
I wouldnt be opening any of their mail-i am sure it is illegal. Just put no longer at this address or havent lived here since (date) please return to sender. and if they are trying to get credit at that address then that is fraud and illegal.
as for the card sent to royal mail
we were advised to open the debt collector letters and directly contact them to prevent any harassment at our door, which is why we did it. xxx
Opening another persons mail is illegal, whether you were advised to do it or not. Do any of your neighbours know where thay may of moved to? If not you could write to the letters page of the local journal.
Six years on and I still get mail for the previous occupants. Usually it goes in the bin these days, or through the shredder.
Some people may disagree, but whats the point in sending it to anybody. Keep the tenner, as otherwise it will sit on a shelf somewhere or be thrown away with the card by Royal Mail.
You have no way to trace the person who left or the person who sent the card. Obviously they don't mean that much to each other to not talk and communicate the fact that they have moved.
