Potty Training - Help!!!

Hi, Does anyone have any good ideas for potty training. My 2 1/2yr old daughter just won't use the potty or toilet. She knows what she is supposed to do as when you ask her where you go to weewee she says potty. She also knows when she needs to go as she stands there holding herself and when you put her on potty she won't go but stands up and a minute later she wees on the floor. She always tells me when she has been. She has used the potty once on her own last wednesday but nothing since. I have tried stickers, and told her if she gets 3 stickers she can have a small treat but all to no avail so far. We also make a huge fuss when we have managed to catch it in the potty which she loves at the time, but next time she still goes on the floor? I thought maybe she just didn't like the potty so we bought a toilet insert and sat her on there instead but she has a bit of a thing about heights and gets a bit stressed saying it's too high, i don't want to scare her. I tried taking her mind off where she was by singing etc which she loves, even tried turning the taps on (was desperate by this point) but no luck, even though i knew she needed to go. Sorry for the long explanation. Does anyone have any good ideas that worked for them? as i'm sure she is ready!!

It does sound like she is ready physically, but mentally not hun. My little boy is doing the exact same thing. He knows when he's ready to wee and he will wave a nappy at me when he's dirty, but the potty or the toilet scares him.

I'm just as stuck as you to how to get him to use it lol. I've tried to reward him with a sweet when he has managed to sit on it, I've tried the toilet seat like you, but nothing has worked. 🙁

I'm just going to give it a few months and try again.

Good luck hun, sorry i've no advice, but I know your fustration 😘

Thanks for replying candgsmum, it's nice to know i'm not the only one having this problem, it's so frustrating. I am loathe to give up and start again in a bit as i have been doing it for for a couple of weeks now and i don't want to confuse her by putting her back in nappies and letting her wee as she tells me you have to go wee wee on potty and not in knickers anymore - bless her. It's just so difficult to know what to do for the best as i don't want to upset her even more! I hope your LO copes next time you try with him hun, if it makes you feel better they say it is harder to train boys, and as he isn't long past 2 you still have planty of time, plus you must be doing something right if he knows when he wants to/has been! Good luck, let me know how you get on in future. Xx

I can see why you don't want to give up, especially as she knows why she has to wee on the potty.

George still isn't talking properly so he finds it difficult to tell me why he's not wanting to sit on it.

Lolly talks really well, too much sometimes, lol! But she still won't tell me why she won't go on potty, she just says she doesn't like it. I suppose at that age she prob doesn't even know herself? Maybe it's just the change in general? She has had quite a lot of cahnges recently as i have a 6mth old too and she has just gone into her first proper bed - which she loves - maybe just one change too many? Think i will give it another week or so and review again then? In the meantime if you come up with any suggestions, they will be most welcome! Maybe george gets frustrated he can't explain what he means to you properly? Xx

we skipped the whole potty thing and went straight to the toilet

we done a silly song when we weed in it 😀 let her see you wee and explain that this is what big girls do and maybe add that big girls also get ......(insert family outing here)

Thanks for your reply soup, i have tried missing the potty training at put her straight on the toilet, we bought an insert for her and a step so she could reach it herself, but she has a thing about heights and says the toilet is too high. I tried singing while she was on there to take her mind off it, but it disn't work for long and she started getting stressed being sat on it and i didn't want to push the issue incase it had the opposite effect? Will try the family outing idea, have tried bribing her with lots but not that yet. She loves the beach though so may be worth a go! Xx

my daughter was the same about 6mnths ago 2yrs now we started again and she has taken to it straight away we stilol hasve a few accidents though

Hi I am at the other scale my 3 and a half boy will do wees but not poos on the potty and have tried everything with still no luck,we did but a really cool potty which helped thou http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fisher-Price-Fun-To-Learn-Potty/dp/B000LXKYV6

Thanks jojo. The potty certainly looks interesting, may have to give it a go, she is a bit of a tomboy and loves gadgets so could help. We only the have the standard potty at the mo. Thanks again everyone for your help, it feels like you are the only one going through it at the time, i only have a few friends local to where i live as i haven't been here that long and their children either aren't at this stage yet or are past it. Plus i can't drive so is difficult to get out at the moment as i don't want her to wee all over the bus seat! Haha.

We used a potty dvd

Once Upon A Potty
That link is for the book, there is a dvd as well.
She sat watching that, sometimes on the potty and sometimes not - might help 🤔

Thanks Elementary, that sounds interesting, i haven't heard of that before. Will have to have a look - am getting desperate! lol

Charlotte had a potty book too. Ittold a story of a little girl needing the potty etc. I'll have to dig it out for George see if it works 🤔

With Jessica i had a potty around with her toys from 6months, just so she was used to it being about she used to follow me and copy everything so everytime i went to the loo i'd sit her on the potty. She will be two in Sept and always does poos, and will do wees if at home 😀 , but out and about if distracted forgets. 😊

Before actually trying to get her to use the potty for wees though i had books that talked about potty's like the little princess books- i want my potty, which she enjoyed cause the princess has an accident at the end. I also took a photo of her sitting on it and some other random pictures and made up a story about her. She has good speech but sometimes i think she talks better than she understands. 🤔

I let Joseph have a potty to play with for ages before I trained him. I also took him to the toilet with me so he wasnt afraid of it or the flush.

When I decided the time was right I planned everything so I could stay inside with him (went shopping etc) and I left him running around for 3 days with nothing on(made sure I had a cosy house) And ever so often I would sit him on the potty or have a game who could get to the toilet the fastest. first day we had a few accidents and on day 4 I went round to my mums with him and he was fab. I havent looked back since.

Good luck Im sure she will master it soon.
