JUst thought i would warn you

i just put my username in google, out of curisity and it bought up all my posts on this site.
Just in case your posting something personal, and don't want others to see it, thought i would just let you know.

hi.. i have just read ur post and put my username in google and it did the same.. i think its out of order it does that cause other people can see what we are putting..have u reprted it?

i think its so that more members will join through finding this site on google as it will appear more often than other parenting forums due to the fact that people can read everything you have posted.

thats why i wont post anything personal on here i dont feel its safe too

As i had posted in the other post regarding this - i put my usual user name in and it come up with posts from all the other sites i use for posting - Justformumz, the nappy shelf, emma's diary and bounty! so its not just a Justparents thing - all sites are accessable! so its not safe to post anything personal on any sites!

Just looked further down the list and there are sites that i havent used for months/years on there with my profile! even places like Backstreet boys froums which i havent used since b4 dd come along and shes almost 4! scary really!

can sites not do it so that only members can view messages.

i think (but not sure) if a non-member was to click on the link hun they wouldnt see it they would be asked to log in, but then if sites like bounty and emma's diary can be seen i dont know hun may be i can see it coz im logged in atm iykwim?

i signed out and tryed it and you can see everything when you click on the links. Not sure I will be posting anything personal anymore.

Its a bit creepy i agree but it came up with all the sites i had used even going bk years so its not just JP that is coming up hun!

i know its not just parents, as all my sites came up too, except bounty, strange.

well nothing came up for me! but then i wasnt going to search through all the 100s of pages just to check lmao, as long as i am not on the first page i am happy 😜

hehe well im sure there are hundreds of things with "Fiona" in them before ur posts hun - when i used sugar it came up with nothing when i used sugarhunny when it cvame up with my posts - must depend on how common a name u use for ur user name!

I did this with bounty awhile ago, all my posts came up, i have differant usernames for differant forums

Yes, search engines list every bit of information that they can find on the internet, and this includes discussion on forum sites as well as other content such as articles, news and blogs.

Although this can seem quite scary, the only alternative would be to make forums only accessible to members, and this can be very off-putting to new visitors who can't see what a community is about before deciding to join it. It also means that discussions about parenting tips and help that members give each other cannot be found in search engines, therefore the site doesn't give the public help and advice to people searching for it that it could if it were open.

Also, closing a site to non members gives a false sense of security - after all several people have mentioned in this thread that they found their listing on forums that *are* closed to non members, and how much effort does it take to set up an account for anyone interested in reading your comments?

The best course of action is to enjoy the community, and feel comfortable in contributing, but to be aware that what you say is in effect public, whether people are required to fill in a form to read it or not. Choose a username that doesn't identify your real name, and don't post things such as your address, phone number, surname or anything else that could be used to identify you easily. Things like first names, general area, or even birthdays are not likely to give much away, so don't panic too much. If you want to meet up or get to know someone better, you can use private messages, but also be aware that people on the internet are not always who they make out to be.

I would also point out that JP has gone to great lengths to protect the privacy of members who post here - for example your email address is not revealed to anyone apart from admin, not even to other members.

Most forums allow members to access others email addresses, and we didn't feel that was a very safe thing, so the only way you can be contacted unless you give your email address out is to be private messaged.

We also have a clearly defined Privacy Policy which can be found in the links at the bottom, this is a legal reassurance that we don't sell on your details, give them to other companies or use them in any way which you don't allow. A good example of this is that we did not transfer any members details over from JFM, and we did not email any members from the old site to encourage them to visit here, even though we had access to them. (Less said about other forums the better in this regard)

(Hayz, I think the main reason your posts are showing up so highly in Google is because your username is so unique. If you're concerned that people who know your username might be trying to collect information about you, contact me and I'll be happy to change your username to something else a bit more anonymous!)

lol well said hun - thats what i was trying to point out lol! my user name is unique to me and i only use 2 or 3 at max depending on the length im allowed so thats why all my posts came up coz its so unique! 😜

OOOhh, I'm unique lol. Nah, I like being unique now you've said that lol. I was just panicking lol, I have flu and feel the world hates me lol. I'm fine now and realise not noone in real life knows my username so it don't matter now. Sorry to cause any problems. (sorry was looking for an appropriate smiley and came across this one and wanted to use it lol)
