Different accents in different regions??
Just reading on the other post about "stokies" and accents and such... Are there many different accents over there too depending on where you come from??
Here in the states, we have the Southern states who mostly talk with a twang but it can be slightly different depending on where in the south you are. Up in the north there are several different accents. When I first moved to Rhode Island, every one teased me about my slightly southern accent... once I was up there for a bit, every body back home teased me about the accent I picked up while I was up there. Where I am in Maryland now people have more of a southern twang (which I'm picking up now lol), even with in the state of Maryland there are different accents. If your from Baltimore Maryland you talk very different from where I am.... anyway, I've babbled enough about the accents here, just curious if it's the same way there??
did I just do a post with no smilies??? 😲 (ok, fixed that!)
i dont wanna asnwer this as il offend lol! but basically every county (well lately every town) has their own accent! we could do with recording us all saying a sentance lol so we can hear the diff accents lol!
where i come from we all are associated to have broad farmer accents (like those in hot fuzz if you seen it) well some of us do but i only got a slight twang of it though when i lived in stoke i picked up a slight stokie twang when i say words like look took cook and book etc and other words come out in a typical farmer accent though i can put on my accent alot more especially when im drunk but yeah our accents over here are quite diverse shall we say
exactly!! stokies say words exactly how theyre spelt! u spell 'cook' the way we say it...whereas everywhere else will say 'cuk'! the same for book look took ect! we dont say 'are you aright' we say 'u'rate' and 'what you up to' is 'ow at' every sentance has the word 'duck' at the end (why i dont know!) and most words we never pronounce the first letter! 'bye and 'see ya' is 'taraa' 'dont' is 'dunna'.in our local shopping centre there is a painting on the wall with the words 'Cos kick a bo agin a wo and y'ed it till yer bost it'... in stoke language, this means 'can you kick a ball against a wall and head it till you burst it'
and we have a very 'take the p*ss in every convo' atttitude towards eachother too!
hope that gives u an idea of my accent!! im sure elle understands me!
yeah i got a very good idea on the stokie accent stokies also say ta duck, alrite shug ayup duck etc basically shug - sugar and ayup is hey up i have to say until i met a stokie id never heard anyone say those words in that way n its kinda cool i like it a little though i am particial for a geordie accent on a guy especially *wonders off into thaughts about sexy geordie guys accents* 😀
i love a guy with a irish accent!! he could have 2 heads for all i care-if he spoke with a irish accent id fall at his feet!!!
mmm yeah it thats kinda nice aswell i know an irish guy and my mates ex was irish izzy loved him
me thinks tammy might be a bit confused by some of the stokie spellings that has been put it in this.. 😐
This has been fun reading 😀 , so it is basically the same as here, dialect depends on the region you're from....
Stokies may sound a bit like our people from Maine it seems like, or the Mainers sound like them a bit 🤔
Cockney is an accent right??
yeh cockney is a london way talk! erm... i know u said u can get bbc channels on ur sky but have u ever heard of eastenders? one of our programs? theyre abit cockney on there... like him off mary poppins and stuff
Oh please, Dick van Dyke demonstrated how NOT to do a Cockney accent in that movie 😉 it was bloody awful guvnor!
Eastenders is a bit more like how they sound dahn ( down ) in Laaaandaaaan ( London )
i wouldnt know as i aint from london!
but years ago the accents were more prominent - like how we talk here,it aint the 'me un mar lady' shite that it used to be!
Scottish Accents vary quite alot over the country- Dont know how best to describe any of them (without offending)
iv found a fab site dedicated to the potteries accent!! (for tammy=potteries is the nick-name for stoke as its where all the pottbanks and all your ornaments/plates/cups and stuff come from)
take a peak - youl have a job undestandin it tho! its like a language from overseas!! lol!it really is makin me laff tho! to look at it sounds stupid but im like 'god i really do say that!!'
Thanks Hayley, I'll check it out when I get home, so my boss does't wonder why I'm sittin over here laughing out loud LOL!!
omg!!! scroll to the bottom of that siote and you can order an audio cd to teach you the potteries dialect!!! 🙃
Well I'm from Yorkshire and we are supposed to sound a bit like 'Ee by 'eck'. There's a famous Yorkshire song called 'On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at' whick means on Ilkley moor without a hat basically lol. Leeds has it's accent too, so I will sound a bit different. I've been told I've got a strong leeds accent.
Mart is only a practising Yorkie lol, but he's lived up here that long you wouldn't know, when he first moved up here he said everyone thought it was funny when he spoke because he was from 'down south'. His dad has a strong southern accent and his mum still has the southern 'twang'.
Yep Mark is from Yorkshire and has a deepish broad accent and his dd also has a yorkshire accent!
I have a sort of Lincolnshire accent so don't sound as 'rough' as dp puts it! Georgia-Mae also has my accent - however my accent is not 'posh' by any stretch of the imagination it's just the way some words are pronounced it sounds 'posher' than Marks accent as well!
I LOVE different accents - especially some irish accents.... 😉
if ya heard me talk you'd prob say im geordie, however my mam grew up in london so i have abit of her twang some times.
i can say 'book' or 'buk' just depends, we say 'like' at the end of many senetences. 'whey aye' is often used as an excitable yes or as another way to say wii.
i cant think of much else.
I'm from liverpool and some people have a very strong accent. we tend to say look cook and book with an oo sound and tra, butties (sandwiches) and laa meaning mate. (remember harry enfields scousers) calm down calm down.
Amber and I were talking about this subject last night, she was there last summer and she definately noticed different accents depending on where she was... she also showed me some beautiful pictures of her trip! 😀
