Weaning off dummy's

When and how did you start weaning your lo's of their dummy's?

Just I'm thinking of starting to with my boys as I feel they're nearly one year old and theres really no need for the dummy's.

I gave them dummies to keep them occupied til it was their turn for the bottle.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

TBH best way is to go cold turkey hun and just take them away! Otherwise just take them away and only give them to them for a short period of time or use it only for sleep times! But i would go cold turkey! its hard but it works! i never gave dd a dummy coz if weaning her off of them so never had this trouble! lol

i would give them something in exchange for the dummy
something to tell them they are 'grown ups' maybe blankets or a nice toy

i used to take ciarans of him in the day when he got used to that i take it of him him a cupple of nights then one day he got up and put in in the bin himself and said to me he wants to be a big boy naw 😀

I took Summer's away in the daytime and said she can only have it when it was dark. Then when waited until she was abit older to take it away at night and told her that there is a special fairy who knows she doesn't have it anymore and the special fairy will let us take her to the shop and get her a present for being a big girl and going to sleep without it.You have to be determined and just think there's no going back coz if you give in once the kids will expect you to give in again 😠

I think if you give a child a comfort-object which is basically a replacement for you then they should be able to wean naturally from it, as they would naturally grow in independence. I wouldn't see anything wrong with a toddler bf-ing so apart from the dental issues and the look of the thing I think it's not a problem for them to have them.

If you want to wean gently you could maybe follow similar lines to weaning from breastfeeding, perhaps the don't offer don't refuse method would help?

yes , we want to wean edward just turned 4 off dummys he loves them , his teeth are in excellent form the dummys have not deformed his teeth at all. its just the getting him to give them up bit which is gonna be hard..

non of my others have a dummy , zoey though at one point had one but we think she was just copying off her older brother edward..

we want to try the cold turkey one , just throw them away bit.. but its getting the courage to do it. i know we have to do it , and its for the better , as they say cruel to be kind.

any how goto go see you from kerry..

Joseh gave his up his self during the day at 10mths but had problems at night, tried and he started fine but then took to eating his hand at night- so I gave him it back. Then at about 20mths (i think) the dummy fairy came and took it away and left a little prezzie for him (so he went cold turkey I guess) After about 3 nights he stopped asking for it.

Some people have the dummy fairy, like the tooth fairy, she takes them away to give to other babies/children (where they don't have shops perhaps, if he's 4 he's likely to be aware of that!)

With breastfeeding some people have weaning days/parties where they celebrate the child growing up. Neither would be my thing but ask me again if dd4's still going in a few years! lol

with my two girls i told them the dummie fairy needed there dummies now because they were gatting big girls now i bought 2 little bags and asked them to put them in we hung them on the fire place a night and i bought them a little present each when they got up in the morning i told them the dummie fairy had been and replaced the dummies with a present each for them they have never had a dummie since. i think i cracked it by how exciting i made it sound to them . i thought it would be really hard as my daughter who was 1 at the time loved her dummie and had it all the time but to my suprise it was quite easy 😀
