Tam (hapydazy) need puppy advice (or anyone else!!)...

today i am going out - havent left Jaykey alone yet - he is doing well with toileting outside as i have been waiting for the signals and have been letting him out. but today is sunday and i go my parents for dinner - what do i do about him going toilet? i dont fancy putting a mat down as im getting him off them and i will be back to square one again.shall i just go out and risk it? (its no big deal as i have lamiate flooring in the sitting & dining room and lino in the kitchen and bathroom so the mess can be easily cleaned).but i want him to get used to the fact that when i go out - he has to learn to wait until im back and let hime out again... what do i do! i cant remember what we did with Brandy (our old dog)

honestly hun, I would let him out before you go out even if he doesn't need to. Then just go out. I can only suggest maybe putting plastic down so he doesn't think you are leaving a pad down to save your floor - or maybe getting some cheap scrap of lino eventually just by the door so if he has an accident it is more likely to be on there. I know what you feel as we had a hell of a time to teach Roxie to not mess while we went out, we would dread coming home sometimes she was such hard work as a young pup. (sorry I don't want to put you off, i'm sure jakey is a lot better than Roxie):) x

ok, don"t think I'm cruel for saying this but have you considered a crate for him while you're gone? Cory was crate-trained as a puppy and she loved her crate. It got to the point that she would just go lay in there all the time even when we were around it was like her little "secure" area. It will also keep him from getting into stuff and chewing and eating things he shouldn't (could keep him safer all around). You could also baby gate him in a smaller area?

They tend to not go potty in the crate, especially if you put him in there to sleep at night as well... maybe a few accidents at first but they train so fast with a crate.

When I was younger and first got Cory as a pup I thought it sounded terrible to put an animal in a "cage" for hours when you're gone, but they really like the security. I think you can tell from pics I posted that my dogs are spoiled and treated like family members (well, they don't eat at the table with us LOL

😜 ) We didn't bring Cory's crate with us when I moved because we didn't have room in the truck but I have to get her another one because she is missing it... she used to just lay around in it all the time. It may also be good for him as a little "escape" from playing with Ethan sometimes too.

my neighbour is a dog trainer and she advised a crate but i just dont have the room with ethans junk everywhere (i only live in a little terraced house).but she said the worse thing you can do is lock them in it,never shut the door she says - she advises to put a towl or sheet over it so they feel like they are in their own little private den.
i went my parents at about 3pm and got back about 8pm and my brilliant pup had made no mess!! i let him out as soon as i got in and he had a poo!! hes so intelligent - then again his breed is known for it aint they! i just hope his good work keeps up lol!

I closed the door on the crate when I would go for more than an hour and leave her. I've never heard not to when crate training but could be her method of doing things (your neighbor)... I've always heard not to put them in for punishment though and I never did.... funny though, if Cory was left old after she got older and she'd get in the trash or something, she'd run into her crate with her tail between her legs and give herself away LOL
