Doesn't everyone get family tax credit, like a set amount?
So that really shouldn't be a swaying factor.
Could it be that Lee earns more than their cut off?
(I asked hubby - he's one of 'them' :D)

Go in there and ask someone else, or you can always try to check on the net if your entitled.

Hi
Every family is entitled to claim family tax credit but the amount you get varies depending upon your income. Maximum is around £116 per week. I know it can go down because last year ours stopped and I had to repay £500 that had been overpaid.
If you are also working then you can claim working family tax credit on top.
With these two benefits you will continue to get paid something up to around the £50,000 bracket for income. Typically if you get the full amount of family tax credit you may be entitled to certain things such as free prescriptions. SO if you're not already getting these check whether or not you are entitled. Every prescription that you don't pay for frees up enough money to buy two or three pints down the pub. Beer tokens are good.

There is a second tax credit which is called working tax credit which is an extra credit which yes you need to work for 16 hours a week or more. Does Lee live for you and provide for your child? If so then you could put in a claim in joint names. I did this when I was living with my wife before we were married because she had a daughter who I was bringing up as my own. The money was paid to her.
