How do you encourage your child to become more independent?

I'm interested to hear how other parents encourage independence in their school-age children.
My child is old enough to start doing more things independently, such as organizing school things, keeping their room tidy, preparing simple snacks, and remembering homework. However, I don't want to give too many responsibilities at once and make everything feel like a chore.
What responsibilities do you give your children at this age?
Do you use a regular routine or checklist, or do you simply remind them when something needs to be done?
I'd also love to hear what worked well for your children and what didn't.
