Does my son qualify for IEP or ECHP?
Hi All,
Just looking for a bit of advice.
I have an 8 year old son who was diagnosed with ADHD in Dec of last year, he is now medicated but has a few other additional needs also.
He has a Visual Processing disorder, working memory issues, he has also previously been under the care of OT until recently due to dexterity and proprioceptive issues and is currently under a physio for hyper mobility, requiring insoles in his shoes.
I have previously asked his SENco about an IEP and EHCP due to his additional needs and was told that he didn't qualify due to his not being on their SEN register. They have done nothing since diagnosis at all.
Am I right in thinking that he would actually qualify for at least an IEP now that he has been diagnosed? I just feel like the school have not been helpful in explaining and guiding me through this process at all and that now they have a diagnosis they have just left him?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
i suppose he does
Hi there,
Yes, based on what you've shared, your son absolutely could qualify for support — whether that's an IEP (Individual Education Plan) or, in the UK, an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan). A diagnosis of ADHD plus visual processing, working memory, and motor issues should be taken seriously, and it's concerning that the school hasn’t put anything in place.
You’re right to question this. A child doesn’t need to be on the SEN register first to be considered for an EHCP — in fact, it's often the parent who initiates the EHCP request directly with the local authority. You don’t need the school’s permission to apply.
You might want to reach out to your local SENDIASS (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information Advice and Support Service) — they can help guide you through the process and advocate for your son's needs.
Trust your instincts — you’re doing the right thing by pushing for support. ❤️
