develop speed and balance
Can anyone please advice some good exercises to develop speed and balance for 10-year-old boy at home? One new resistance band set from timberbrother and two 5 lb dumbbells are all we have right now. Is there any equipment need to be involved? He’s already starting some short jogs. THANKS!
Hi Idene, You asked this more than a year ago. I can't see any answers. Actually, I'm also looking for some body-training exercises for my nephew. So, if you've got anything to recommend me. Please share away. And by the way, dumb-bells are too early in my views for 10 y/o. I'd like them to train with spinners/round belts.
For speed and balance at that age, keep it fun and focused on body control rather than heavy strength work. With what you have, you could try:
- Ladder drills (no ladder needed) – mark spots on the floor with tape or chalk and have him do quick steps, side shuffles, or hop patterns.
- Single-leg balance holds – stand on one leg while passing a ball or doing light dumbbell curls.
- Resistance band side steps – band around ankles or knees, take small, quick steps to each side.
- Skipping or jump rope – great for coordination and foot speed.
- Light medicine ball throws – if you don’t have one, a small basketball works for tossing and catching while balancing.
No extra equipment is strictly necessary at this stage. Keep the sessions short (10–15 minutes), focus on good form, and make it playful so he enjoys it.
