Nala

What does Nala mean?

Nala is associated with the Sanskrit word nāla, meaning a reed or hollow stem. It is also the name of a king in the ancient Indian epic the Mahabharata, where Nala is male.

For many modern families, though, Nala immediately brings to mind the brave lioness in Disney's The Lion King. This gives the name a warm, spirited and playful character, with a simple two-syllable sound that travels easily across cultures.

Historical Context

Nala is an ancient Sanskrit name, borne by King Nala in the Mahabharata; the underlying word nāla refers to a reed or hollow stem. Although traditionally masculine in this Indian context, Nala has become widely used for girls in English-speaking settings. Disney's 1994 film The Lion King, featuring the lioness Nala, is a major modern association and has helped establish its feminine feel for many parents.

Popularity of Nala over time

In 2025, Nala was given to 66 girls in the UK and 317 girls in the US. Nala has risen sharply over the last 20 years, and is now an uncommon girls' name especially in the US.
