Kayan

What does Kayan mean?

Kayan is associated with the Kayān, the royal and heroic line of Persian tradition. It has an assured, resonant sound and a strong connection to Iranian epic heritage, giving it a sense of ancestry, stature and legend.

It is sometimes translated simply as “kings”, but this is an oversimplification. In Persian usage, kayān refers specifically to the Kays, the figures and dynasty linked with the Kayanian tradition. Kayan therefore feels regal by association rather than being a direct everyday word for king.

Historical Context

Kayan represents Persian Kayān, connected with the Kays of Iranian legend and the Kayanian line familiar from Persian historical and epic tradition. The singular element kay has an older history reaching back to Avestan kauui, but its precise original sense is debated by scholars. In later Persian, Kayān became the established name for this particular legendary royal line, rather than a general term for kings.
