Taking baths during pregnancy

What's the deal with this?

Im stressed now because I didn't know this was something to avoid Sad Face I was taking a bath last night when my husband burst in to tell me to get out! He'd been reading on the net how it can harm the baby. Eeek! I do tend to take more showers than baths, but once or twice a week I really enjoy my hot soak. And I do like the water quite hot, its just what I find comfortable. Nothing worse than a lukewarm bath in my opinion. So is this true? I've found lots of conflicting advice and Im worried Ive done some harm.

Hon all i can say is that i only had baths when i was pregnant with my 3 cos we didn't have a shower at that time, and they are all fine.....im thinking its the HOT HOT baths that are to be avoided.

I used to love getting in the bath with my bump, its was the time they would wake up with the light and everything and really go for the whole *look mum im a footballer* LOL

I hadn't even heard you shouldn't get in the bath when pregnant, im sure millions of women have and do bathe when pregnant, sometimes it seems rediculous the new *rules* we have, from having my first to my third everything changed as in what to do what not to do everytime i was pregnant!!!!

im like you i mostly get showers but i do like a good old soak and im sure once or twice a week wouldnt hurt.

ive never heard of this before but on eastenders there was a storyline of someone trying to harm her baby and she ran a hot bath but that was scalding hot so maybe dnt have them too too hot Confused

my midwife told me 'dont have baths have showers' then on another occasion she said 'dont have showers incase you slip' Teeth Suspect

the hot water (as far as i was aware) helps your muscles relax which COULD promote early labour BUT millions of women dont listen to it LOL

i on the other hand is scared of hot water so it wasnt an issue Cuckoo

dont take to much notice hun, your fine, and your hubby is very protective! bless Kiss im jealous Neutral

Thanks everyone for your replies. It has put my mind at rest somewhat, Im still not sure I'd feel comfortable having one now though cos it would always be in the back of my mind.

By the way, just got my first scan appointment yesterday! And its on friday 13th Shocked Am so tempted to change it, is that stupid?

Emz, you probably know this already but inside you there is a 'plug' to stop baby juice coming out, no water will get in and force baby out. take no notice of what the 'help pros' say, most of it is bull Smile

It's only HOT baths that are dangerous in early pregnancy hun as they can trick ur body into early labour! i love my baths steaming hot! and ic ome out red as anything! but ive only got 2 weeks to go!
If u werent allowed baths hun they wouldnt offer water births would they? lol!

Thanks everyone, I do feel better now. But might hold off on the steaming baths for a little while. My midwife never mentioned anything about baths so not getting worried over it.

I did ring to try and change my scan date but they couldn't swap it. So friday 13th it is! So excited, but a tad nervous too Confused

As the others have said it is the very hot baths that you should avoid. Still enjoy taking your bath though, especially when you get to the later stages of pregnancy, it can help take the weight off. If you think about it, you're encouraged to swim during pregnancy and it's not really that different to taking a bath.

Good luck with your scan on Friday.

hi hun i dont think you have anything to worry about i asked my midwife when i was pregnant about hot baths coz i had heard the same she told me its only in late stages of pregnancy that you should avoid hot baths as it can set you of in labour thats why the advise you to take them when your overdue x

I had no idea either but then I'm going slightly mad with the list of things that are not supposed to do. I'm sure in moderation that most of them won't hurt really.
And I need my baths to relax after a long day at work and an equally long and not much fun commute.
I don't have mine too hot (i hope) and Boots do some nice stuff to put in them in their pregnancy range - which, if you join their club, they will give you money off vouchers for.
I'll stop rambling now
