Unexpected car journey - no car seat, what do you do??

Just wondering what everyone would do in this situation.

You dont drive and find your self stuck and need to get a lift/ call a cab etc
You have a small child under 3 and you have no child seat

What do you do?

The law says that you should not hold child on your lap
Nor are you supposed to put adult belt round child under 3

What they say is that if you dont have car seat, you cant travel in car with an under 3 at all, but sometimes this isnt possible

So whats the solution?!

apparently it's ok in a taxi with no child restraints, or ok for a child over 3 in a taxi or in an unexpected necessary journey.

hey hun
my dads a taxi driver and u dont need a car seat in a taxi as its never really a long journey that u r making and a child can either be on knee or in a lap belt in the back as long as u control them however please never put the belt around u both place it around u and hold your child to u as if u have a accident (pray not) and u have it around u both the weight of u will cause the belt to crush your child inguring severly or worse
hope this has been helpful

this is an interesting one.

I broke down on my own with my 2 girls 1 and 2. i did mention on the phone that i had 2 babies with me.

When the recovery vehicle came it did not have any child seats! thankfully my dad came and as it was only a breakdown we could move the seats accros and was fine BUT it did make me think what would i have done if not!
I mean even if i'd have been asked to move the carseats - i have vissions of me trying to move and fasten carseats into this massive van and somehow keep DD's from playing on a major road Shocked

there's no way i could keep them both seated (never mind their safety!) in a strange van/car.

apparenlty by law you are fine to not use a seat if it is an 'emergency' journey.

neither me or my husband drive but we do have a car seat incase we ever get a lift anywhere.

But i always wonder what to do here. In Turkey car seats are not compulsory and i have been in loads of cars where even the car seat belts are broken so you could not fix a seat in even if you had one. I always worry and don't know what to do in town if anyone offers us a lift. Becouse if they are Turkish they do not understand the whole car seat safty issue and with limited Turkish i don't want it to sound like i am cricising there driving.

I have started taking Cems reins with me, if the seat belt can be done up i have done it up tight them put his reins on him and fixed it together not great but at least it gives him so protection. I agree with bunnigirl you should never share a seat belt with a child.

I have had to ask the taxi driver to take my childs car seat back to my house all the way from Heathrow Airport because he would not let me travel without it. It is a lot safer with a seat but what a predicament! Be glad things are safer here though! In South Africa I have seen small children standing on the back seat of the car and looking out the back window, as well as mother's sitting in the front with a small baby on their lap and neither one has any seat belt on - it is very common and shocks the hell out of me. I have even stopped someone and shouted at them for doing it, it makes my blood boil! Mad
