Dog WARNING

Yesterday my little boy (aged 1) was bitten by a dog on his face right next to his eye, a cm over and it would have been on his eye. Thankfully it was not a bad/deep bite but it was very upsetting and I kept checking him. This morning he's got a round red mark, a bruise coming on and around the area and his eye-lid is abit swollen. Anyway my main warning is that we never expected this dog to bite. It was my friend's dog(my neighbour) and we see them all the time nearly every day. The children have always played with him and he was completely used to them and when he bit my son wasn't even doing anything bad to the dog. I know some children bash pets about but he was just standing at the edge of the sofa the dog was laying on. The dog didn't even give a warning growl or anything, he just snapped out. So even though we all say "I know my dog would never do that" be careful because it's absolutely terrifying when it happens to your child; and most children come off alot worse than my boy did.

awwwwwwww no. i hope hes ok hun.

same thing happened to my ben when he was 18months old. it was his grandads dog and she suddenly turned. caught ben on the hand. he had a small hole just under his little finger. ive never seen so much blood.they cant stitch dog bites due to risk of infection from germs, so he had to have it dressed and redressed every other day. took 4wks to heal. hes now terrified of dogs and both my mum and sister have a staffy, who are so friendly but i cant trust them now.

Aww hun thats horrid! Big Kiss to your LO.

I'm not a dog fan anyway, so i wouldnt trust them in the first place. There is only one dog ever around my children and I always am very much on guard.

I hope he is ok hun ( have you gotten him checked out by the GP?)xx

Im not making excuses for the dog (because I recently got rid of my dog after only 10weeks because she snapped at Joseph-she was a rescue dog) but dogs who aren't usually in the habit of showing aggression dont snap or bite without cause- sometimes it is the heat and on so many occasions I know where the dog has snapped at a child to be taken to the vet to find out it is really it is really ill and in pain (most times cancer) I would tell your pal to take the dog to the vet and explain about its behaviour.

Well she actually had her dog put down last night because of it. She felt so terrible and said she couldn't keep him incase he did it again. I said well I just wouldn't take my kids up there any more but she said he still might do it to someone elses child. Then she'd feel even worse for ignoring the first warning. I think she felt really bad too because it was right by his eye and like I say the slightest bit over it would have been in his eye-very worrying. So her and her daughter are both very sad today about their dog but they were both also shocked by what he'd done. But the vet said it was because the dog's eyes were getting abit clouded over(he was 12) and that on the one hand he wouldn't have done it visciously,it would have been he maybe didn't see properly. But on the other hand as his eyes got worse he could become more jumpy and do it again accidently either to another person or to one of their other pets.

I thought there would be a reason. But that doesnt make it any better for your friend Or for you and little one.

How is his eye now?

awwwww must be awful for them.

the dog that bit ben, bella was old and his grandad always kept her away from the kids which i thought was wrong as it was her house and he never let her meet ben or catherine when they were born and we took them round. and thats what happens. i told them not to have her put down cause it wasnt her fault but james' dads. she was 12 and had a stroke and had to be put down just 3 months later

Sorry to hear, hope your little one is okay. I love dogs but don't trust them all. They may be pets but still got abit of wildness in them. I hope it doesn't happen again to anyone else!

Man this is scary stuff. I have a border collie, and was terrified he'd do something, at first. I have since really relaxed...

What can I do though? I can't keep him chained up all of the time... He seems really tolerant - 'kisses' her in the mornings and she hugs him throughout the day.

But, like you say, any dog can turn. I hope that the intelligence of the border collie brain will prevent him from being vicious to anyone... it'd be the last thing he did. Sad Face

I hope your friend's little one is doing ok. They'll have to work really hard with him to ensure he doesn't end up with a lifelong phobia.

xxx

He's not too bad thanks girls, still marked but ok. It is very sad about the dog. I love them and grew up with them, my favourite special dog was a collie and she was the soppiest most loving dog. Always really protective over me as my parents got her when they were expecting me and we grew up together. She lived until she was 16 and then fell asleep on the patio in the sun. My friends had only had the dog for about a year as they took it in when their friend went travelling, but they were still attached Sad Face
