Toy cars for little girls - what's your thoughts?

Hi,
Just wanted to get some advice really. My two DDs have come home raving about these toy cars they played with round a friend's house. Apparently, they're quite girly - I think they're Polly Pocket ones and are all pink and glittery etc. I don't think there's any problem with them playing with the cars but their gran wasn't so sure. Just wondered what everyone else thinks? Does anyone else's daughter like playing with cars? Do you think that's a problem? I really don't, but maybe I'm in the minority???!! Any thoughts would be appreciated.... Thanks

I've got no problem with girls playing with cars and boys playing with dolls!
My DF and his family however seem to have a problem with boys playing with dolls but not girls playing with cars which i think is an awful attitude to have!
a boy will want to play with a doll especially if he has a lot of female relatives or babies are being born into the family its natural! and my DD is very girly (pink, glitter & dolls!) but she still loves to play with cars and builders sets! just think grandparents are very old fashioned but im very equal opps as i work with children and u have to be! just coz i boy plays with a doll does not mean he will be gay and just coz a girl plays with cars doesnt mean she will be gay or a tom boy!!! my DD will still choose everything pink and asks for any toy that is pink but as she was the first of only 2 female children in the family out of 10 children she's bound to show an interest in boys toys!! its whats going on around them that influences what they play with hun not how they will turn out when they are older Razz

I let my kids play with whatever they want to. I am hugely anti gender-specific toys, being imposed upon children, influencing their idenity before theyare even old enough to realise they have a choice in the matter! I have only ever bought my children gender neutral toys, untill they actually started asking for things. My son had a kitchen for his 3rd birthday, then he had a pirate ship for the foloowing christmas. He had an ironing board and some power rangers for his birthday just gone! My daughter loves her one baby doll, but otherwise will go for trains and cars every time. At the end of the day, if people have concerns about ti making children 'gay' or anything else for that matter, then so be it. I love my children no matter what and want to give them the chance to form their own identity based on their own choices, and not based on the social norms of our stunted society.

Sorry rant over. In short, give them cars!

Wow, are we in the 1960s???

Kids can play with whatever the heck they like!!! Katie was playing with an action man the other day! Who cares? Tell the oldies to shurrup! Katie has cars and dumper trucks and dollies and allsorts.

I have a twin brother, and really resented him getting all the boy toys and my not getting to play with them. It just seemed silly to me, even as a little girl.

Oh - and my twin brother loved my dolls, but was discouraged from playing with them. Silly silly silly!

when i was a kid i had a basket of toy cars and i even had a garage and a mat with roads on it.. it was one of my fave toys and i loved them. so i dont have a problem with girls playing with them and if my little girl wants to play with cars then she can and i dont see the point in saying boys cant play with dolls and girls cant play with cars and toy guns etc

I think i am lucky, as even when i was little my parents encourage us to play with whichever toys we liked. Our granparents still said cars were for boys and dolls were for girls tho.

I have a friend who has two little girls. She has nothing vaugely even unisex. GIRL GIRL GIRL all the way! She is told this is what girls do and this is what boys do. I know each to their own but when it means things are said to my kids i do resent it a bit. Like they were here the other day and the little girl was in a fairy costume, josh asked if he could have a turn and my friend told him, 'oh no, girls dress as fairies, why dont you dress as something for boys - like a builder or fireman?' If my son wants to be a fairy then damn it he can be!

I think children should play with whatever they want to regardless of sex, apart from anything when they are little they don't 'get' the concept of gender anyway.

Quite aside from that who says cars are for boys? It would be a very brave man that told me I wasn't allowed to like cars

I haven't got a prob with it, Caitlin loves cars and she likes Thomas too, children will try playing with everything plus if you take it off them they will only cry about it!!

I bought Scarlett a little car to play with in Asda the other day, and she amazed me as when I gave it to her she got on the floor and pushed it along, she knew what to do with it. I have no problem with girls and boys playing with dolls , cars etc.

My DD likes playing with toy cars and tools! she loves to think she is helping daddy fix things! hehe, to take this away from her just because she is a girl would be so wrong and very horrible! I agree that children should be allowed to make their own choices as to what toys they play with no matter what! Very happy

Aaralyn plays with cars and such, she has her own set of building tools and she likes to dress up too. Whatever makes her happy if she's not hurting herself or someone else, I'm all for it!

isaac loves nothing more than playing with next doors little girl and her barbies, kitchen etc.. and lulah has got all of isaacs old toys from tool kits to cars.

my step son (7) bought some teddies at a car boot sale a few weeks ago and wanted to take them back to his mums (we try and discourage this as nothing ever gets returned) but as they were only cheap things we said if he wanted he could. he told us last weekend his mum had thrown them out saying teddies were for girls and he's too old for them!!!! Shocked we took him to a school fete and he won a pink purse with chocolate money in it and he was more impressed with the purse. so while any kids are in my house they can play with whatever they like whether its fairy costumes or playing with the garage and cars!!!
