I did Usborne a few years back and this is certainly one of the best sign-up deals I've seen them do.
The downside of the cheap sign-up promotions I found was that you could get people to join up easily, but, once they had the cheap starter kit they'd take the books and run. Not do diddly-squat afterwards.

Did you experience that in May at all? Have they got any deals this month for new sign-ups?

This month its half price to join ie £19 for £100+ starter kit.

In order to stop people just signing up to get the starter kit only they ask that you at least complete £100 of sales in the first three months of joining
