If your child is showing signs of unruly/bad behaviour, check out other underlying causes before going whole hog with a punishment. It may be that they are tired, hungry, have eaten sweets that have made them a bit hyperactive etc. As they get older it could be hormonal or linked to pressures at school.
I don't mean don't punish them, but to look beyond the immediate punishment to change the behaviour.

It makes more sense to ban the smarties than to punish the child for behaviour that tends to follow them. More sense to encourage earlier bed times/regular naps than to end up cross because they were too tired to eat their dinner etc.
