Please don't put anything on your nipple to deter your baby. It's a betrayal of trust and might really give them a nasty fright.
I don't think you should worry about it so much! Just because you weaned your other babies off at a year, doesn't mean you have to do the same this time around. Perhaps this baby wants to breastfeed for longer because she recognises that that is the time when she gets mummy to herself, little blame to her.
My advice to a friend would be to give her the breast whenever she asks. If you have been refusing, she'll only ask for it more! If she gets it every time she asks, maybe she won't see it as such a big deal.
If you must wean her off, the way to do it is to refuse every second request. What I mean is when she asks, turn her down, but if she presists and asks again, then let her. That way, if there is a real need for it, that need will be addressed, but if she is easily cuddled in by hubby through the night or distracted by telly or toys through the day, then she wanted it out of habit I suppose.
