Any tips for going camping

We are thinking of going camping this year. Not sure where yet so any recommendations would be great.
We have a lovely big tent and a little stove we got of freecycle last year but not much else yet. We are trying to get a list together of what else we will need to take so has anyone got any suggestions.
There will be 6 maybe 8 of us(depending if my two eldest children want to come)including a toddler of two.

Also the lakes or cornwall. anywhere really as kids just love a HOLIDAY. and if you are near a beach you have free entertainment and most caravan/camp sites have play parks

My mum & dad used to take us to Hollywell bay in Cornwall every years and its gorgeous! the beaches are lovely and the shopping is great i do miss going there every year!

Or the isle of wight is lovely! for such a small islnnd there is so much to do!

Hiya hun, we have camped in a tent for a few years although I will admit that we have upgraded to our own touring caravan.

We joined the camping and caravaning club and you can discounted camping at large sites and they send you a magazine every month which gives advice on camping and also local District Association rallies which are up and down the country if you want really cheap camping (they are usually in farmers fields tho so you probably wouldn't find shower and toilet blocks if you needed them). (Sorry for the shameless plug ).

We have camped and caravaned with our lo's since they were newborn as long as you are prepared it should be really fun.

hi all we went camping to apple tree wick (near bolton abbey)and we all really loved it went fri to sun kids just wanted to play near river most of time bought them fishing nets only prob was.......forgot the sun cream and i am still burning now luckily had hats for kids.....he he went for a 2 hour walk in woods just so i could shade from sun .....planning our next trip there nice to just chill away from hectic life some times i turned my phone off on fri turned it bk on sun pm had 13 missed calls (mostly from work ) and 9 messages

Iv never been lol so cant help, but were off this Friday hopefully to Apple treewick, hope we get weather like you Hayley

i just come back from the new forest it was brill.
Was good eing back to basics.

I went camping for the first time last year. We went to the Loire Valley in France, it was soo amazing! My conditions to hubby were they have to have proper loos and showers on site. We found this place; http://www.theloirevalley.com/content/default.asp

great value and fabulous, the place is under new management now but I'm sure we will still re visit as it was so great. The facilities are great too take a look!

Some useful stuff we took;

* Lamps that had a insect repeller. (they make a noise that you can't hear but bugs hate!
* little seats, Argos do them, will be a godsend when it's damp out in the morning!
* bowl
* brush or pot scrubber
* can opener
* Box/storage with a lid to keep the wildlife away from any food you might have!!

Don't let your child anywhere near a hot grill!! I just went this weekend and had that experience with my daughter. Otherwise when ya go have fun. I made a list prior to going so I wouldn't forget any nescesities (sp??).

We've stopped at a site near Bridgwater called Fairways International in the past and it's a lovely site. It is a very friendly site but if clubhouses and Kids Clubs are your thing it aint for you

Well your profile says you're from Devon, so my first idea goes out the window. When I was a kid we spent a lot of time camping down in Cornwall and Devon. Always had good fun.

Other suggestion would be Wales. The Gower near Swansea is nice or if you go another hour up the road to Pembroke area there are some nice places including Tenby.

Another place that I have been and enjoyed was the lake district.

If you want beaches go to Wales. If you want lakes and hills to walk go to the Lake District.

Haven't been camping in Scotland yet but I am sure it is great if you get the weather. Not likely this year as it doesn't look like we're going to have a summer. I went to Dounreay in Scotland once, right on the north coast. The countryside is absolutely amazing. Was there working so didn't get a chance to look around but would definately go back when I get the chance.

Camping essentials

1. Tent
2. Sleeping bags
3. Roll mats for hardened campers or inflatable matress for the wimps.
4. Gas stove
5. Gas for the stove in 4
6. Coolbox with ice blocks. Always take twice the amount you would use so that you can get one lot frozen whilst using the other lot.
7. A football
8. A frizbee
9. A mallet to bang tent pegs into ground
10. Food and drinks
11. A kite
12. Something to dry wet clothes on

Everything else can pretty much get done on the way along.
Okay and before anybody says anything yes I did used to be a boy scout and a cub before that and even a beaver.

It depend on you budget but I've always found the Caravan Club sites are a really high quality. Some you do have to be a member of but a lot you don't and you don't have to be in a caravan either.
They're really clean and smart and normally have playgrounds and activities for kids (some even have TV rooms) and the people you meet there tend to be really nice, like-minded young families.
Can you tell that we used to go to them all the time as a child? -- ahh the memories ...
