I worked at my childrens primary school for five years. When I left a few years ago there was only one male teacher there! How sad is that? I was only doing teaching assistant, care taking and midday suppervisory assistant roles. But I was a male presence and for some, that was the only man they interacted with all day.

I think it vital that children have both male and female role models.

i remeber being at primary skool and we only had 2 male teachers - one was the head the other was the teacher of the last yr.

i agree with tonyleo - kids need male role models in skool, especially those who dont have the male role models back home. i think tho that its all down to the men feeling that they are targeted for the paedophile things - when women are just as much involved as men are! the man is always first to be targeted over anything abusive, which is wrong as women can do it too.and i think this is the reason there aint many male teachers,i think its cuz they feel vulnerable or targeted

I had one when I was in primary school but never got taught by him Cuckoo lol. & I am only 19 lol

I think there should be more, role model, especially for single parents, as there is a male they can interact. And they are doing it regularly with both female and male. Shame there isn't really. I agree with Hayley. I've always found it hard talking to male teachers well in secondary school not sure if this is why

as a teacher I would say yes there should be more men in the primary classroom (we are an all women staff- apart from the janitor)

Men who do teach in primary school go up the promotional ladder a lot quicker.

i think there should be more male teachers as my primary school there was only the head and the teacher of the last year and towards the end of my time there another male teacher did join but a couple of years ago he was arrested for processing pornographic pictures of young boys on his pc which was a shock as i live in a small town/village where nearly everyone knows everyone somehow. he was charged with it and successfully prosectuted but is yet still allowed to teach..

i do think more male teachers are needed but you get one individual like that teacher i know and everyones automatically tarred.

my Daughter is in reception and she has a male teacher. I dont know if it makes a difference if the teaching staff are male or female.

i think for kids of single parents a male teacher is a great thing, in some casses they can providse the male role model kids need.

but other than that i dont see what the sex of the teacher matters as long as they are a good teacher.

i may change my mind when ds actually goes to school, and i eventually get my backside to college and think about training to because a primary school teacher Thumbs Up

my daughter has had a male teacher in junior and infants school and i cannot express what they have done for confidence, as a shy child afraid of men (not my doing just was what it was) they have brought out her adventurous side and shes really come out of her shell. I assume because men are more no nonsence where as women have more of a mummy attitude and tend to baby them. (no offence to lady teachers)
just that it worked for her.,

She has the most wonderful lady teacher now, but i wish that i could take Mr Brewster and Mr Long to the high school just for her as they know her so well.

She go up in September.

So yes more male teachers please!

Trouble is that if the male population don't want to go into that line of work they won't Confused

this might just be a one off nut my son has a male teacher and he's absolutely hopless! i don't feel as if he's learnt much this year, he's very pompous and arrogant and as my other ds (who's 5) says he seems to like the sound of his own voice. he might end up having him again in Sept. i hope not though. saying that the best teacher i had in junior school as a man. he was quite strict but everybody liked him.
