Introduction and questions about Tourette's Syndrome

Hello, I just joined this forum today. I'm just curious if there are any parents here of children with Tourette's? My 19 year old nephew has tourette's, along with Asbarger's Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and he is now being treated for classic bi-polar, the poor kid has lots of issues but is a big sweet kid and I love him dearly, as does the rest of our family. My question now concerns my 4 year old daughter. She has been displaying "tics" for a long time, never verbal, just physical. Always one thing at a time and then she'll move on to a new tic. Her pediatrician says it's normal to have tics or habits at her age, but I guess I am more concerned because my nephew has tourette's and can be genetic. We don't know if it came from our side of the family or my sister's inlaws, no one else has it in either family that we are aware of.

So, just curious if any one has any input or experience with young children with Tourette's syndrome.

I haved worked with lots of different children and many have additional needs. However none have had tourettes (it has always fascinated me though). I would say keep at your Doctor if you are concerned- you are mum and you know your daughter the best.

As Alex has said I would keep on at your gp about it, only you know what your child's behaviour is like.

Thanks for the replies! I've been reading alot about tourette syndrome. It may be just tics with her and nothing else. Regardless, she is unique in so many ways that we would just accept that as one more special thing about her.

I'm curious if any who have children with autism know or have read anything about the "Crystal Children"?

my son thomas suffers from autism and other problems as well , his self asteem is very poor , everyday almost he keeps saying its weird to be alive and then he asks me is it weird to be alive i say no.

when he has done anything naughty after we tell him off and say you should not do that , he says just get rid of me and you will be alright. he isnt naughty as such its just his way of coping.

everyday with thomas is a struddle with his lack of understanding and his very low self esteem i keep trying to get help but its hard , thomas's behaviour is affected by this as well.

when i said we tell him off , we are just pointing out to him your not allowed to do that its wrong , but he just does not understand so a second later he has done it again.

today im going to phone the local CASADT team up again.

our local CASADT team are suppost to get us some help with CAHMS i think its called to help thomas with growing up , thats stressing thomas as well.

thomas s like a 6/7 years old in a 12year olds body. in mature/mental age.

Hey Kerry, I feel for you honey. My daughter does not have autism but my nephew does(my sister's 19 year old son) He has Aspergers syndrome and has been teased and riduculed and picked all through out his school years. I think because of his lack of "normal emotions" it was actually to his advantage because he would just laugh with the kids as if he had no idea he was being picked on. He also has tourettes, CP, OCD, and now is being treated for bi-polar. Every day is a struggle for my sister, he is like a 7/8 year old in a 19 year old's body. He does have a job at a market bringing grocery carts back into the store which he loves (except when the customers don't put the carts in the right place and leave them all over the parking lot) He was reprimanded a few times, one in particular, he shoved the cart into a lady's car and told her "this is what happens when you leave the cart in the parking spots", LOL, I know not really funny, but don't ya just get annoyed when you can't park in a spot because someone was too much in a hurry to put the cart in the proper spot!? Anyway, along with the struggles, he brings us soooo much joy! I hope you a great day today Kerry
